The Cree Nation of Mistissini is a Cree community in Eeyou Istchee on the southeast shore of Lake Mistassini, Quebec's largest natural lake.
The Cree Nation of Mistissini, in Cree ᒥᔅᑎᓯᓃ (Mistisinî), takes its name from "Big Rock," a massive boulder that has been an important reference point for countless generations. The rock marks a traditional passage point and meeting place for the Cree, who have lived around Lake Mistassini for centuries. In 1821 the Hudson's Bay Company built a trading post on the spot where the village stands today.
The community is in Eeyou Istchee, on Category I land as defined in the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement of 1975. The Nation is a member of the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) and is negotiating a Self-Government Agreement with Canada. For years, Mistissini opposed uranium mining on its land, and in 2015 that work received international recognition.
Mistissini is home to the head offices of the Cree School Board and the Cree Construction Company. Tourism is a community priority. The 20-year My Mistissini 2034 plan builds on the lake's fishing and adds winter excursions. Through ACCESS Open Minds, young people can get mental-health support from Aaschihkuwaataauch, which means "providing help urgently when people are in need."
